DESIGN, TOOL FOR THE FUTUREWith this special number, Temes de Disseny aims
to bring to the second Primavera del Disseny (the design fair held
in the spring in Barcelona) a few reflections on the role that design, as an
integrating element in the cultural phenomenon, plays and might play in
thefuture.
In this sense, Temes de Disseny seeks to stimulate debate on
questions which, in one way or another, have always been present in the minds of
professionals and also of those who reflect on the process of the
determination of forms.
Some of these questions are recurrent. Among these we
can emphasize the theme of liberty and as a corollary, restraints on
the activity of design. This leads us to a discussion of the expressive
possibilities of the designer and the frontiers which separate design from art.
Another of the subjects which preoccupy the designer,
as a professional of the culture of masses, is his ocurrence in the
configuration of new aesthetic proposals, obliging him to resort to the latest
technological advances.
Does design influence the environment? To provide an
answer to this question is, we feel, one of the great responsabilices of the contemporary
designer.
Does the designer hold in his hands the possibility of
acting on the environment in an autonomous way or does he always depend on
established powers which, in the last instance, are those which determine
environmental policy?
The fact that design is an element which creates new
worlds opens up a new burning controversy which will have to be fuelled by many
more discussions and debates, towards which we have only attempted to take a
few steps.
